About Us
History
The Sunday School of St. Illuminator’s Cathedral was established in 1940. Since then it has successfully prepared members of our church who learn about the fundamentals of the Armenian Church as well as the Bible. Since it’s founding the school has boasted students ranging in age from 5-16 years old and curricular topics such as Armenian church history, prayer, traditions, sharagans, and saints. Students have participated in the choir and taken yearly field trips, most recently to see the Armenian khatchars at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Service learning has also been part of the program where students raised money and used it to fill a need within the church community. Technology has also been integrated by means of a class blog where students can write reflections on church-related topics and strengthen bonds with their peers outside church.
Sunday School Today
Each Sunday from September until June, we offer children a firm foundation in Christianity, including the Bible, our Holy Traditions, and Armenian culture, history. Classes are held every Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until 12 noon. At noon the children go as a group to church and participate in the rest of the service.
Our curriculum is professionally prepared and provided by the Prelacy’s Armenian Religious Education Committee (ANEC). Classes are lively, engaging, and vary according to the age of the children in attendance. We utilize resources such as The Bible, the Church Liturgy Book, textbooks, and other material selected by the teacher. Weekly lesson plans include morning work, interactive play, written and craft activities, as well as technology and building projects.
Attendance and Registration
Children ages 5-16 years old are welcome to join our classes. Although we begin in September, students may join the program after this date by contacting the directors and completing a registration form.
